...Dental Implants allow replacement of missing teeth or can provide stable support for dentures. There are three parts when replacing a tooth with an implant. The first component is the implant or “root” which is placed into the jawbone by the surgeon. This is made of titanium and has a shape similar to a screw. Once the bone and implant heal or “integrate” together a stable base is provided for the new tooth. The second piece is the abutment which is placed into the top of the implant by the dentist or surgeon. The abutment serves to link the implant and the final component, the crown. The crown is placed by the dentist and is made to look like the other teeth. The new tooth functions like a natural tooth; however, it will never get a cavity and hygiene is easier than around a bridge. Implants can also be used to anchor dentures, especially lower dentures. Patients notice much improved chewing function and retention of their dentures with as few as two implants. Some patients will need preparation of the area before an implant can be placed. This may require adding bone by grafting, and possibly using Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) to speed the healing of the graft. |
